Can Engineered Wood Floors Be Refinished?

Can engineered wood floors be refinished?

During my quest to pick a hardwood floor, I was told that engineered hardwoods cannot be refinished. Is that the case? Can they be refinished, if they can how many times?
The flooring that I purchased is the Hallmark Silverado Mink Birch.”
(Question is from a retailer in the NY area)

“A natural prejudice exists with many who believe that solid is the only way to go.  While solid can be sanded more often (4.0mm usable wear layer) than Silverado engineered (2.5mm wear layer), solid flooring is at a disadvantage in comparison to engineered in regards to dimensional stability.  Wood is a natural product that moves with the rise and dip of relative humidity and here is where engineered has the advantage.   Also it depends on the degree of damage.  The average sanding removes about .75 to 1.0mm of the surface.  Falling within that average the floor could be sanded twice as the wear layer on Silverado is 2.5mm.  However, if you can avoid deep gouges or high heel dents the most favored treatment is to refresh the finish by adding an additional coat of urethane to the existing finish.  If a board is badly damaged, replacing that board can be a far more cost effective choice than sanding the entire floor.

Avoidance of sand and refinish is key as to do so removes the hand-scraped effect of the surface.  The other point of the scraping is that it hides a certain amount of wear and tear to the floor.  Any ding or dent in a smooth finished floor has a tendency to  stand out.  Be sure to use Hallmark TrueClean to maintain your floor, which can be purchased from Amazon and our website provides a direct link to Amazon page making it easy to find.  Many popular floor cleaning products contain waxes and soap that over time can cause the floor to become dull.  Hallmark Floors also has a limited lifetime warranty against wear through of the finish (original owner) so bringing up refinishing in many cases is a bit of a scare tactic.”
(The response is from Ron Oliver, VP for Hallmark Floors)
