Hosting a holiday party can be fun. Your family and your closest friends will come over during the holidays to celebrate with you. You’ll be bonding over great food and spend quality time together. Children will be receiving lots of gifts and will go home with big smiles on their faces. Everyone is happy, except for your floors.
With all those guests, food and the winter weather, your gorgeous flooring may end up stained, scratched or ruined. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to keep your hardwood floors beautiful despite the hustle and bustle of the holidays. Here are some of them.
Protect floor from Christmas tree
Guests are not the only one who can scratch or dent your wood flooring. Your Christmas tree can ruin your floor, too. Potential damage may come from a few sources such as water, needles and tree saps. If you fail to protect your floor, it can cause unsightly damage that will stick around, even when the holiday season is over.
Don’t let that Christmas tree ruin your floor. Place a sheet of plastic on the floor beneath your tree to protect your floor from water damage. We also recommend placing self-adhesive felt pads on the bottom of the stand’s legs to protect it from dings and scratches.
Place door mats and area rugs
It may be awkward to ask your guests to take off their shoes before entering the house, but it can actually help reduce the damage and beating that your flooring may take. But if you are hosting a large party, the no-shoes policy may not be a good idea.
If you do allow guests to wear shoes inside the house, be sure to place a door mat by the front door and remind guests to wipe their feet before entering the house. Make sure that you invest on a large, durable mat as it helps remove debris from shoes more effectively.
Invest in area rugs
Area rugs will not only keep your floor protected from the potential stampede that holiday visitors can be; they can also help decorate your home for the season. Choose rugs in bright seasonal colors and festive designs. Place them in high traffic areas such as living room, entry way and hallway. The more you can protect your floor, the better. If you’re not prepared, there’s a good chance that you’ll see heel scratches and shoe prints on the floor once they leave.
